Sharing heritage? Politics and territoriality in UNESCO’s heritage lists

UNESCO heritage policies encourage the idea that should be ‘shared’ at international scale, and invite states involved actors to adopt this vision. Yet, ‘sharedness’ can understood in many different ways. This paper explores several territorial political issues related notion of sharedness. A focus on uses a particular tool – ‘multinational nominations’ sheds light transnational cultural practices examines forms cooperation within communities between framework Convention for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Specifically, it analyses work French commission ICH as well nomination processes three lists: flamenco, falconry alpinism. It is argued ‘shared heritage’ interpreted variety ways, leading contrastive appropriations competing scenarios among various protagonists.
